Final Year Project

Project Title

An Exploratory Study of the Struggles of First-Generation Undergraduates in an Urban South Metropolitan City in Pakistan

Description

First-Generation Undergraduate (FGU) students lack the cultural capital necessary for success in their degree, as they are the first in their immediate family to attend an undergraduate degree (The Center, 2017). Consequently, they struggle to adjust to and thrive in the university environment, facing more obstacles than their peers, yet their experiences and struggles remain unheard due to a lack of research, further marginalizing them. This qualitative research aimed to capture the struggles and coping mechanisms of FGUs in Karachi, with findings suggesting that a student’s family, awareness, previously acquired social capital, and intersecting identities (such as socioeconomic background and gender) affect their adjustment to the university environment and academic journey. It is worth noting that these students are more prone to deteriorating mental health.
